Land Acknowledgement at WCSU

This is a guide to the WCSU Land Acknowledgment adopted in Spring 2021. A land acknowledgement is a formal statement often spoken at the beginning of a public event that is taking place on land originally inhabited or owned by indigenous peoples.

History

In the Fall of 2020 the WCSU University Senate convened an ad-hoc committee on Land Acknowledgment which was tasked with creating a land acknowledgment statement for the University, as well as guidelines for its use. The University Senate approved the guidelines drafted by the committee on 2/17/21. The committee, in consultation with external experts on Native American history of the region as well as Indigenous residents of Connecticut, drafted two versions (short and long) of the statement. These were approved by the Senate on 4/21/21. Both the guidelines and the acknowledgments were subsequently approved by WCSU President John Clark by 4/28/21.
