1983 - The college becomes Western Connecticut State University. Grasso Hall on the Westside Campus is completed
1992 - James M. Roach (1992 - 2004) becomes president. He oversees renovation of the midtown campus open space with the creation of the “quad” seen here in a picture by Peggy Stewart from 2002.
1993 – Prof. Frank Dye (pictured with Prof. Pinou) is the founding director of the 33-acre educational and recreational Westside Nature Preserve. In 1997 it opens to the public and is used as a laboratory for environmental studies. This 2004 tour group was studying aggressive plants, vines and berries.
1994 - Wiliam O'Neill Athletic Center with Feldman Arena opens on the Westside campus.
1996 - Due to delays in the expansion of Memorial Hall, the state purchases an office building on White St. to act as an interim student center, naming it University Hall. The White Street parking garage is completed and opens. It replaces the infamous "Pit" parking lot.
1997 - The state buys the St. Nicholas Orthodox Church (shown in this 1950 graduation photo) on Roberts Avenue. It is renovated and named Alumni Hall. A childcare center is established at Alumni Hall for children of students and staff. Preschool classes are started and some funds are set aside to offer places to Danbury children. The center was closed in 2019.
1998 - Renovation and expansion of Memorial Hall is finally completed, and it is renamed the Student Center.
1999 - Warner Hall, named for the WCSU anthropology professor and administrator, Truman Warner, is built and temporarily houses the library while the Haas library is being renovated.
Pinney Hall residence is completed on the Westside Campus. It is named after A. Searle Pinney, chairman of the CSU board member of the Connecticut Legislature and a noted Danbury attorney. He is on the left, next to John Bailey in this 1965 photo - they were chairman of their respective political parties in Connecticut at the time- Pinney as Republican and Bailey as Democrat.
2000 – A renovated and modernized Haas Library reopens. Staff and books return from Warner Hall. Sadly, the books stored at the West Street Armory during the renovation suffered severe water damage.
2002 – The state buys back the Roberts Avenue School and proceeds with demolition and remediation.
The artwork “ Illuminata” by Clark Wiegman is installed, hanging from theceilings of the Haas Library Pavilion and the first floor of the library.
2003 – As part of the 100th year anniversary celebration, gates are erected as a formal entrance to the midtown campus. The “Entering the Gates” ceremony becomes part of the start of each new academic year. Pictures from the 2019 ceremony are above.
2004 - James W. Schmotter (2004 – 2015) is appointed president of the university.
2005 - Centennial Hall residence and parking garage are completed on the Westside Campus. The new Science Building on the midtown campus opens.
2006 - The new Westside Campus Center is completed and opens in January 2007. Governor Jodi Rell (who attended WCSU) participates in the ribbon cutting ceremony. The Fifth Avenue parking garage opens on the Midtown campus.
2008 – The Fairfield Hall renovation is completed on the midtown campus and opens as a co-ed residence.
2011 – Governance of the State universities and community colleges is transferred to a newly created Connecticut State Colleges and Universities Board of Regents.
2013 - 2014 – The third floor of the White St. garage is renovated and an elevated walkway across White St. is added. In 2014 construction of the Visual and Performing Arts Building on the Westside Campus is completed
2015 – Dr. John B. Clark (2015-2022) is appointed president. Alumni Hall’s name is changed to the Irfan Kathwari Honors House, home to the new Kathwari Honors Program.
2016 – 2017 The Westside Alumni Pavilion is completed. In 2017, a renovated Litchfield Hall reopens on the midtown campus.
2018 – A new campus police station is completed and opens. The WCSU logo is updated and the image of the cupola is dropped.
2019 – The Higgins Hall and Annex renovation is completed. The Joy Brown sculptures are installed outside the VPAC building on the Westside Campus. Brown is known for her humanoid ceramic and bronze figures. She is co-founder of the Still Mountain Center in Kent, Connecticut whose mission " is to support and celebrate artistic exchange among peoples locally and globally by providing opportunities for cross-cultural appreciation, collaboration and innovation in the arts." https://www.stillmountaincenter.org/
2020 – Berkshire Hall renovation and conversion to a student center begins. The architect’s design of the new west entry facing the quad is above. Completion is scheduled for the spring of 2023.
2020 – 2022 – The Pandemic. The university shuts down and moves online for the remainder of the 2020 Spring Semester. It slowly reopens and students begin to return to campus in the fall. The last of the Covid restrictions are lifted in April 2022.
2022 – WCSU mascot becomes the Wolves, replacing the “Colonial Chuck” mascot and logo seen above with Pres. Schmotter (2004-2015). Dr. Paul Beran (2022 - ) becomes Interim President of the University and spearheads a review of the University’s mission and academic structure.
2023 - Recognition of the 120th anniversary of the school is reflected in the revamped logo for the anniversary year.
