DNS Yearbook and Family Information

HELEN CRAWFORD. Danbury, Conn. Although Helen is very quiet and unassuming, she is sure to gain success. Two things she always manages to do her homework and to get a ride to school. "We just don't see how you do it, Helen! !"

Taught at:  Pembroke School, White Street School

Helen was born in Putnam County, New York in 1904 and her family moved to Danbury soon after.  In 1910 her brother, Leon was born and they are living at 139 White Street. Her father, Harvey Henry Crawford (born in 1880, Towner, Putnam County NY) worked as a motorman on a trolley.  Her mother was Nellie E. Woodin (born in 1885 in Holmes, Duchess County NY.).  Her brother Lyman was born in 1919 and by 1920 the family had moved to the Pembrook district of Danbury.

1920 -1934

After her graduation from the Normal School in 1924, the 1926 city directory lists Helen as a teacher but doesn’t give the location of the school. Her father Harvey is still a motorman. By 1930, he owns a home at 433 Padanarum Rd. According to the census, the property is valued at $3,500.  Harvey is now a watchman at a machinery shop, T. M. Co. Helen is a teacher in a public school and Leon is a stock clerk in a gas & electric company.

From 1931 to 1932 Helen is listed as the principal at Pembrook School.  In 1934, she is teaching at White Street School located at 234 White St. Her father, Harvey, died October 14, 1934.

1935 - 1944

In 1937 Lyman is working as an electrician at 15 Rose St. Leon has married Almeda and is an electrician at the electric company.  In 1939, Leon and Almeda move to 12 Walnut St, and in the following year they move to Bethel.  Lyman and his wife move to 3 Knapps Lane and he is employed as a salesman at 11 Rose St. (probably at one of the hat factories. The large Mallory Hat Factory complex was one of many located in this area). In the 1940 census Helen is living with her mother in the Padanarum Rd. house.  She is still a public school teacher, earning $1,200 per year.

Helen died on April 14, 1944.  Her Danbury News Times obituary states that she had married Clark Underhill and moved to Bethel.  Helen (and her parents Harvey and Nellie) are buried in Wooster Cemetery in Danbury down the street from the WCSU main campus.  The gravestone has her name as Helen Crawford.
