Search Syntax
Using Boolean operators is only the beginning for crafting the language of your search.
Common Search Syntax Elements
These elements can be used in most systems.
- Quotation Marks "" - Search for terms together or using specific language
- Parentheses () - Nest/group terms together
Truncation
Truncation lets you search using partial words. There are also wildcard symbols that can be used in the middle of words for spelling variants.
- Asterisk * - search using the root of a term to include plurals and variants

Built-in Limiters
Each platform as built in limiters in Advanced Search. The most common one to look for are listed below.
- Search Fields - Limit your search to certain fields like Subject, Title, Abstract, Author, Full Text, etc.
- Full-Text Access - Uncheck this for your assignment!
- Date Range - Limit to results within a specific date range
