Mental illness is a wide open field of study. You will need to choose a particular aspect of the topic to make it manageable. Consider limiting your research to specific segment of the population (women? chidren? college students?) and use your own experiences and thoughts as inspiration for a good research paper.
Really think about what you want to know... ask a question about something and conduct your research to try to answer that question.
