How to Use this Page

The videos below cover various topics surrounding the library resources and how to use those resources. These videos can be accessed either directly from the page or by the links that have been provided. You can choose the videos you wish your students to view and then place the links to those videos on your syllabus or in Blackboard. Or you can launch the videos in your classroom with this Guide.

Accessing and Searching LibGuides

The above video teaches students about the large variety of LibGuides available to them.

LibGuides are prepared by librarians to help students find the best resources specific to their disciplines and research needs. Think of a LibGuide as a virtual librarian - available to the student at any time of day or night

What are Databases and Why Use Them

According to a recent survey of incoming freshmen at WCSU, over 84 percent of entering students believe Google and/or a combination of Google/Wikipedia can satisfy all their research needs. This video provides a lively introduction to why academic databases are the superior choice.

Searching Basics - WestSearch

WestSearch is the library's main catalog. From here students can search not only WCSU's entire catalog, but discover materials at other CSU's available to check out. In this video they'll learn the basics of how to search WestSearch.

This video will help students shape their topic according to the assignment's requirements - by choosing a topic that is neither too narrow nor too broad.

This video will teach students how to distinguish a reliable website from an unreliable one.

Google Scholar

WCSU has synched its catalog to Google Scholar to allow students to see if any of the findings in their search are available at WCSU. Students will gain access to more articles if they go through WCSU. This video shows students that option and how to use it.

eBooks in WestSearch

The library has a large collection of eBooks available and they are easy to find and navigate. This video walks the students through how to use an eBook in our catalog.

Plagiarism and How to Avoid It

An Introduction to what constitutes plagiarism in academic scholarship and how to protect against it through the use of proper citations.

An introduction to citations and where to find the correct formatting guidelines.

How to Use Inter-Library Loan

Many materials not available from our library can be found through an Inter-Library Loan. This video walks the student through how to set up their account and use it.

Introduction to WCSU's Archives and Special Collections

WCSU's extensive archival collection allows students to experience using real primary source materials firsthand. This video introduces them to the archives located in the basement of Haas Library.
