What is an LLM?

ChatGPT is one of several artificial intelligence (AI) Large Language Models (LLM) being developed. ChatGPT (generative pre-trained transformer) is owned by Open AI, based in San Francisco. Elon Musk and Microsoft are both major investors, along with a variety of venture capitalists. The company is privately owned. Other LLMs are currently being developed by Google and Meta as well as several other companies. 

While LLMs have been around since the 1960s, ChatGPT-3.5's introduction in November, 2022 made a very big splash. This is due to a variety of factors, including:

• its easy accessibility (GPT-3.5 is free)
• it's fast, easy to query and is capable of human-like discussion
• social media was quick to spread the word
