Library Instruction

Let us show you how to utilize library resources and services to help you do your course assignments

Instruction

Librarians are happy to meet with individual students or groups for library instruction related to work in the context of course assignments, other academic endeavors, or personal interest. Students can have their questions answered and receive assistance through email, Chat reference, or WebEx video meetings. There are Subject Librarians who can help with topics in particular subjects.

  • Library overview-refresher: overview of the library website, resources, and services that includes a brief description and/or demonstration of WestSearch, Databases, Journal Finder, Library Guides, off campus access, interlibrary loan, material purchases, citations and bibliographies, library hours, and staff contact information.
  • Instruction on becoming discerning information consumers: identification and evaluation of reliable resources, including matters related to the information landscape, academic reputation and rigor, as well as ethical, legal, economic, or social issues.
  • Exploration of Library resources: working with subject specific resources; resource access tools such as Journal Finder (link resolvers), interlibrary loan, and Get It Now; individual journal subscriptions vs. journal articles via a subscribed database; library guides, login instructions, and more.
  • One on one research consultations: librarians are available to meet with students to answer questions and provide guidance in utilizing library resources and information literacy.

Students can receive individualized attention.

  • Subject Librarians are available to meet with you. Contact the librarian for the subject that is best characterized by your topic. They will set up a time you can discuss your assignment, activity, or questions.
  • Place: In Haas Library, you will be able to meet with a librarian via chat or WebEx. From other locations, use LibChat on the library website. Also, contact a librarian to set up a video meeting on WebEx, WebEx could be used for meetings that would have normally been done in the physical setting.
  • Time: Subject librarians are generally available Mon-Fri in the 9-5 range, however there are exceptions, so it is best to contact the librarian about availability.

For the Fall 2020 semester, there is a Reference Librarian scheduled as follows. Whether you come to Haas Library during open hours, which differ from Reference Hours, or you want to meet online from any computer or device, there are the reference hours:

  • Monday-Thursday 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM
