Library Instruction

Types of Instruction Support

Instruction can be utilized to help with class assignments as well as with the WCSU Gen Ed Information Literacy Competencies.

  • Library overview-refresher: overview of the library website, resources, and services that includes a brief description and/or demonstration of WestSearch, Databases, Journal Finder, Library Guides, off campus access, interlibrary loan, material purchases, citations and bibliographies, library hours, and staff contact information.
  • Instruction on becoming discerning information consumers: identification and evaluation of reliable resources, including matters related to the information landscape, academic reputation and rigor, as well as ethical, legal, economic, or social issues.
  • Exploration of Library resources: working with subject specific resources; resource access tools such as Journal Finder (link resolvers), interlibrary loan, and Get It Now; individual journal subscriptions vs. journal articles via a subscribed database; library guides, login instructions, and more.
  • One on one research consultations: librarians are available to meet with students to enhance the effect of classroom instruction.

Due to Covid 19 there are some changes regarding delivery of Library Instruction for Fall 2020. However, the content and purpose of library instruction remains the same.

Instruction sessions can be:

  • Place: In your classroom, in the library, or online. The library has a computer classroom available, Haas 434, which has 27 computers so hands-on, computer activities can be carried out. WCSU has a license for WebEx, so WebEx could be used for holding class sessions or individual consultations online that would have normally been done in the physical setting.  Students can do activities associated with the class assignments.
  • Time: During the regularly scheduled class time or at another time, outside of class time if desired.
  • Duration: Full class period or portion thereof

WCSU Libraries would like to obtain session feedback from students and faculty. Feedback will be used to determine how well instruction sessions meet student needs and to improve the way we provide instruction. Feedback is obtained via a short survey given by the librarian at the end of the instruction session. A copy of the survey is available at the link below.
