Searching Techniques for Students & Faculty

Basic & Advanced-level searching techniques for students and faculty to use when searching academic databases.

Welcome to the Searching Techniques Guide!

Searching Academic Databases can be tricky to navigate. Whether you're just starting out or need a refresher, this guide will give you the run-down on college-level searching techniques!

If you're stuck in your research at any point, don't hesitate to reach out to a librarian!

In-Person Help

Prefer meeting face-to-face? We’ve got you covered!

From the WCSU Libraries Homepage you can check our Hours of Operation to see when a librarian is staffing the Reference Desk at either the Haas or Young libraries. During these hours anyone is allowed to walk up and get help from a librarian!

You can also schedule an appointment ahead of time! Go to the WCSU Libraries Homepage and click on the big orange button that says “Schedule a Research Appointment” to pick a time and place!

Virtual Help

There are a few ways to interact virtually with a librarian!

From anywhere on the WCSU Libraries website you’ll be able to see our Chat Icon, whenever it is orange that means a librarian is live and ready to help with any questions that you might have. When the Chat Icon is greyed out, that means your questions will be submitted as a ticket and will be responded to within the next 24 hours.

If you’d prefer to email directly with a librarian, you can reach us at: ask@wcsu.libanswers.com
