The Chicago Manual of Style offers two different ways to treat citations and bibliographies – Notes and Bibliography (below) or Author-Date (below). Consult your professor on which you should use for your paper.

Basic examples of each style are offered below. For more detailed examples see chapters 14 and 15 of the manual,
N.B. IF YOU ARE USING MICROSOFT WORD, click on “References” on top tab line, then on “Insert Footnote” or ”Insert Endnote.” The notes will be automatically numbered and your cursor will be brought to the correct spot for inserting the note information.
Book – one to three authors
Insert note number in your text for footnote (at bottom of page) or end note (at end of chapter or whole paper.)1

This is a basic review of the rules for this format. For more details and examples, consult Chapter 15 of the Manual of Style. Cite sources throughout your paper in “in-text citation” format and list them at the end of the paper in a reference list.
