Women Who Made a Difference

This guide has been created to document the resources used to create the exhibit "Women of Mark in Connecticut" at the Haas Library.   We've chosen to highlight the accomplishments of notable women who lived in Connecticut at some point during their lives. They have made their "mark" in many different fields and impacted the lives of those around them.  We hope you enjoy learning about them as much as we have enjoyed compiling their stories for you.

We've used five categories to group these women and their achievements. The Arts pages explore Artists (painters, textile designers, an architect and a photographer), Performers (singers, songwriters and actors) and Writers. Educators includes women who taught despite opposition, the women who worked to advance the profession and educational activists.

Firsts is a broad category, spotlighting those who were the first women to achieve a goal. We've created a separate page for those women who made their marks within Government - in politics, in the judiciary or protecting the citizens of state and country. The many women doctors who achieved "firsts" are in a category called "Firsts - Medicine".

The Social Activists page highlights women who worked to improve the lives of other women in many social contexts. We've carved out a separate category, Social Activists - Suffrage for the many women who, in working for the woman suffrage cause, made their mark in Connecticut and nationally.

All these talented women exceled in their chosen fields or causes and continue to inspire us with their life stories and their talent, dedication and achievements.
