Measurement Tools in Research

The purpose of this guide is to help you to locate measurement tools to be used in your research. These tools may be in the form of tests, instruments, questionnaires, surveys, interview schedules, checklists, and more.

Find a Known Test in Health & Psychosocial Instruments (HaPI)

HaPI contains information about tests AND it tracks usage of tests in research such that you can see where a test or instrument has been used. Again we will search for Gray's Oral Reading Test.

1. Go to Advanced Search in HaPI and type in the name of the test and select the Title field.

2. There are 76 results.

3. Note the item record. It tells us:

  • The source is a secondary source
  • The test was used in an article published in the Journal of Educational Psychology
  • There is a Field named Measure. This field indicates what types of variables/areas the test measures as it relates to this article.
  • There is a field name Sample. This field indicates the sample population related to this article.

4. I'd like to read the article. It's not available in HaPI, so I will look in another database for it, in Education Research Complete (ERC). I search for the article title in Advanced Search and I see ERC has it.

5. I click on the link for the PDF and obtain the article.
