Writing 2 & Information Literacy (WIL)

Definition

Writing II and Information Literacy: In Writing II, students build directly on the objectives and outcomes of Writing I by enriching their rhetorical knowledge and writing practice with basic research methods and with formal instruction in information literacy as defined by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL): “Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.” 

Requirement

All students must take either Composition II or a course designated as Writing II/Information Literacy.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students completing the WIL requirement will be able to …

  1. Demonstrate facility in writing with research as a process that includes revision in response to instructor/peer feedback; 
  2. Use appropriate information technologies to conduct research, complete inquiry-based projects, and make informed decisions;
  3. Understand the economic, ethical, legal, and social issues associated with the ownership, access, and use of information; and
  4. Demonstrate the ability to locate, analyze, synthesize, incorporate, and attribute primary and secondary sources appropriate to goal(s) and audience(s).
