First Year (FY)

Definition

First Year Experience: FY courses provide academic and cocurricular support as students begin university life. These courses allow first-year students to transition into the University and to appreciate the values, culture, and resources of the academic community. FY courses orient students to the expectations, resources, requirements, and rewards of their WCSU experience.

Requirement

All entering students must successfully complete a course designated as FY. Transfer students will be required to complete an equivalent course.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students completing the FY requirement will be able to …

  1. Understand the physical and virtual WCSU campus,
  2. Identify and utilize resources in the university community, including faculty, staff, and administration,
  3. Identify relevant academic policies, processes, and resources related to academic success and timely attainment of degree requirements 
  4. Understand the culture and expectations of academics at the university level,
  5. Identify and develop habits and practices necessary for continuing academic success,
  6. Articulate their values and identity and recognize how these values shape their decision-making, relationships, and pursuit of academic success and personal well-being
