Natural Sciences and Technology (NST)

Definition

Natural Sciences and Technology: A well-rounded education includes exposure to a range of modes of inquiry, including inquiry in the natural science and in technology. Inquiry, in this sense, involves asking appropriate questions, designing and implementing strategies to answer those questions, and interpreting and explaining the results within a disciplinary/theoretical context. 

Requirement

All students must successfully complete a minimum of 7 credits, including a laboratory course in the natural sciences (Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Meteorology, Physics), with an additional 3 credits from Natural Science, Computer Science, or select courses in Management Information Systems.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students completing the NST requirement will be able to …

  1. Evaluate the quality of a claim related to science or technology on the basis of its source, and the logic or methods used to generate it.
  2. Interpret and evaluate data in order to draw reasonable and logical conclusions.
  3. Apply inductive and/or deductive reasoning to solve problems and answer questions involving technology or the natural sciences.
  4. Represent and report data symbolically, graphically, or numerically.
  5. Communicate knowledge science or technology using appropriate terminology, representations, models, or analysis
