Arts (AH)

Definition - Arts

The Arts include, but are not limited to, Digital Interactive Media (DIMA), Film and Broadcasting (FAB), Music (MUS and MED), Theatre Arts (THR), Visual Arts (ART), and Writing (WRT).
 
Study in the Arts includes the practice of an artistic discipline through creation, performance, and/or critical analysis. Arts courses may include the scholarly exploration of history, theory, and creative processes in the given discipline. Studio, workshop, and performance courses in the Arts should include components of discovery, practice, giving and receiving feedback, reflection, and revision/evolution of the work. 
 

Student Learning Outcomes - Arts

Students completing the AH (Arts) requirement will be able to …

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the discipline or form;
  2. Demonstrate a process of exploration and discovery in their own work, or identify/analyze it in the work of others;
  3. Evaluate their own work, and/or evaluate or analyze the work of others;
  4. Present their own work or research to others; and
  5. Demonstrate how feedback was received and implemented in the finished product (for studio/workshop/performance courses).
     

Humanities (AH)

Definition - Humanities

The Humanities include African-American Studies (AAS), Communication (COM), English (ENG), History (HIS), Humanistic Studies (HUM), Philosophy (PHI), Languages other than English (ARB, CHI, FR, GER, IT, MAN, POR, SPA

A well-rounded education includes exposure to a range of humanistic modes of inquiry. Through studies in the humanities, students will encounter the interrelatedness of human experience in historical perspective; the diverse nature, meanings, and functions of creative endeavors through the study of literature, music, the theatrical and visual arts, and related forms of expression; and the ethical principles that guide individual and collective action.
 

Student Learning Outcomes - Humanities

Students completing the AH (Humanities) requirement will be able to …

  1. Identify, critique, and assess the variety of human experience(s) through texts, artifacts, and other cultural productions.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of key concepts, terminology, techniques, theories, or methodologies related to the study of human behavior and expression in the context of historical, social, political, cultural, and economic conditions.
  3. Critically appreciate and examine genres, forms, perspectives, events, and ideas of culture and society.
     

Arts & Humanities (AH)

Requirement

All students must successfully complete 9 credits:

  • 3 credits in the Arts (Art, Digital Interactive Media Arts, Music, Theater, Writing)
  • 3 credits in Humanities (African-American Studies, Communication, English, History, Humanistic Studies, Philosophy, Languages other than English)
  • 3 credits in either Arts or Humanities.

Courses from other disciplines may also count in this learning area if they are closely related to the discipline or are cross-listed with a course in Arts or Humanities, (such as World Perspectives and Women’s Studies.)
