Speech Communication (SC)

Definition

Speech Communication: A WCSU education cultivates the ability to communicate complex ideas to diverse audiences. A scholarly definition of speech communication includes informative, instructional, and/or ceremonial processes. Speech communication involves the thoughtful evaluation of a topic, the clear and concise expression of a proposition, the use of appropriate evidence in support of the proposition, the effective engagement of the intended audience, and the polished delivery of a well-crafted presentation.

Requirement

All students must successfully complete 3 credits designated as SC. Only classes from the Communication Department will be designated as SC except for specific courses in Education/Music Education. Speech Communication and the instruction of speech communication must be a naturally occurring part of the course.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students completing the SC requirement will be able to …

  1. Determine scope: Students will define the boundaries of the argument in a manner that reflects knowledge of the topic,
  2. Use evidence: Students will identify and cite relevant and appropriate evidence,
  3. Construct arguments: Students will synthesize evidence in support of the central argument,
  4. Respond to context: Students will demonstrate understanding of the audience and the situation, and
  5. Control delivery: Students will deliver well-crafted, polished presentations.
  6. Create and express oral messages appropriate to the audience, purpose, and context.
  7. Employ Communication theories and strategies to convey an oral message.
  8. Critically analyze messages.
