WCSU General Education Committee

Racial Justice (RJ)

Definition

WCSU graduates will be prepared to interact in a society where racial discrimination and inequities exist yet understand that working to promote proactive and preventative measures resulting in equitable opportunities and outcomes for all is a necessity. Students will confidently and comfortably excel within racially and ethnically diverse groups, communities, and interactions.

Requirement

All students must complete one course designated as Racial Justice. This is not a credit-bearing requirement. Courses may count as either Global Diversity OR Racial Justice, as well as the distribution area connected to the prefix.

All students must successfully complete one course designated as exploring racial justice. Most students will satisfy this requirement in other areas of General Education, such as in Arts and Humanities or Social and Behavioral Sciences. Some courses outside these areas may also qualify as Racial Justice courses if they meet established learning outcomes and requirements stipulated by the Committee on General Education. Such courses will require the approval of the Committee.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students completing the RJ requirement will be able to …

  1. Recognize the extent to which overt and covert forms of racism may oppress, marginalize, alienate, create, or enhance discrimination,
  2. Identify how racial injustice interacts with other intersecting forms of discrimination, such as through gender, sexuality, ability, or economic class,
  3. Understand how knowledge and language are produced within a society, field, or discipline and how this knowledge can be used to perpetuate epistemological forms of racial and other social injustices,
  4. Demonstrate critical thinking skills needed to engage in meaningful dialogue regarding racism and other social injustices, and
  5. Identify constructive alternatives and reparative changes to racial and other social injustices.
