WCSU General Education Committee

Global Diversity (GD)

Definition

WCSU graduates will be prepared to actively participate in our interconnected world. Global Diversity courses expand students’ understanding of cultures outside the United States through an exploration of artifacts, practices, institutions, and interactions of diverse cultures. By encountering global perspectives outside of career pathways, students will comprehend the world's historic and/or contemporary complexity.

Requirement

All students must complete one course designated as Global Diversity. This is not a credit-bearing requirement. Courses may count as either Global Diversity OR Racial Justice, as well as the distribution area connected to the prefix.

Most students will satisfy this requirement in other areas of General Education, such as in Arts & Humanities or Social and Behavioral Sciences. Some courses outside these areas may also qualify as Global Diversity courses if they meet established learning outcomes and requirements stipulated by the Committee on General Education. Such courses will require approval from the Committee.

Students who have completed a full semester-long study abroad will have also satisfied this requirement.

Student Learning Outcomes

Students completing the GD requirement will be able to …

  1. Describe the value systems; cultural, political, and economic norms and practices; communication styles; and/or social formations representative of societies outside the United States, in current or historical context; and
  2. Demonstrate a critical sensibility of the culture, history, or current circumstance of diverse groups of people in a global context; and
  3. Apply quantitative and/or qualitative methodologies to the study of non-U.S. cultures, societies, histories, and political systems.
